My wife may burst into uproarious laughter when she reads this, and I've struggled at times with excessive people pleasing. It's about standing up for yourself, letting people know your limits and teaching people how to treat you. Setting boundaries is about curing the disease to please. I should take care of everyone around me whether they ask for help or not. I don't care if While Christ was on earth many believed in him but wouldn't say so because they had the disease to please. Like most women, I have always suffered from the disease to please. The disease to please is a common one, and nobody is immune. Thanks to the late Harriet Braiker, though, I've got some tools to address the issue. And now that I think about it, help, make it all better, and do the work for people that they should be doing themselves. In her book, The Disease to Please, Dr. Harriet Braiker listed The Ten Commandments of People Pleasing: Is this a helpful slogan to live by? It seems to me the world has become obsessed with the "disease to please" that is please others. Many of us are taught early on that the needs of others should always come before our own, and we bend ourselves into pretzels accordingly.
